A

Ace-High
A five-card poker hand containing an ace but no pair (see "Ranking of Hands").

Action
Opportunity to act. If a poker player appears not to realize it's his turn, the dealer will say "Action to you"

All-In
To run out of chips while betting or calling. In table stakes poker games, a player may not go into his pocket for more money during a hand. If he runs out, a side pot is created in which he has no interest. However, he can still win the pot for which he had the chips. See also "Short".

Ante
A small portion of a bet contributed by each player to seed the pot at the beginning of a poker hand. Most Hold'Em games do not have an ante; they use "blinds" to get initial money into the pot.

B

Bad Beat
When a poker player with a superior hand loses to another player drawing to a hand with bad odds.

Bet
An amount put into action with the intent of winning the pot. Also known as a wager.

Big Blind
The second or larger blind wager in poker board games such as Hold'Em

Blind
A forced bet put in by one or more players before any cards are dealt. Typically, blinds are put in by players next clockwise to the button.

Board
All the community cards in a Hold'Em game - the Flop, Turn/Fourth Street, and River cards together.

Bring It
To start the betting on the first round

Broadway
An ace-high straight

Brush
A cardroom employee responsible for managing the seating list.

Bullets
A pair of aces

Burn
To discard the top card from the deck, face down. This is done between each betting round before putting out the next community card(s). It is security against any player recognizing or glimpsing the next card to be used on the board.

Button
A white acrylic disk to indicate who is the nominal dealer on poker board games such as Hold'Em and Omaha.

C

Call
To match a bet made by the previous player.

Cap
To put in the last raise permitted on a betting round.

Check
  1. To pass the option to bet, if a bet has not already been established; however, the player has the option to Fold, Call, or Raise once the action comes back to that player.
  2. Another word for "chip" or "cheque", as in poker chip.
Community Cards
Face-up cards that are shared by all the players in a hand. Flop games have five community cards.

Counterfeit
To make your hand less valuable because of board cards that duplicate one or more in your hand

Cowboy
A nickname for Kings, more often heard in the plural.

Deuce
Twos are called deuces.

Door Card
The third card dealt in a stud game, also known as Third Street.

Exposed Card
A card dealt face up that was supposed to be dealt face down.

F

Fifth Street
The fifth card dealt in Seven-Card Stud. Also known as "River".

Fish
A bad poker player; a poker player who will tend to give away lots of money. Common poker wisdom holds that if you can't find the fish at your table, you're it.

Floorperson
A person who represents the management to watch the action, make decisions on errors, and control dealer procedures.

Flop
The first three community cards, put out face up, all together in poker games such as Texas Hold'Em or Omaha High or High/Low.

Fourth Street
The fourth card dealt in a Seven Card Stud game. Also known as "Turn".

Fold
To concede a hand, to surrender or give up, or to muck the cards.

Green
Green is the most common color for $25 chips, also known as a Quarter.

Gunshot
An inside straight draw.

Heads Up
A pot that is being contested by only two poker players

High Hand
The highest ranking exposed hand at the end of the game. See "Ranking of Hands".

Hole
The cards dealt down, which are not exposed until the Showdown.

Jackpot
The amount of money accumulated by the house from the pots to be paid to the winner of a particular hand.

Juice
A connection with someone of authority who has influence or power used to solicit favors and privileges.

K

Kicker
An unpaired card used to determine the better of two near-equivalent hands.

Knock
The tapping of a player's hand symbolizing a check.

L

Live Blind
A forced bet put in by one or more players before any cards are dealt. The "live" means those players still have the option of raising when the action gets back around to them.

M

Misdeal
A situation that shall cause all the cards to be returned to the dealer for a re-deal providing no substantial action has taken place. A misdeal will not usually be called if another solution is feasible

Monster
An extremely strong hand, one that is almost certain to win the pot.

Muck
The pile of cards which have been folded or discarded. Once a player's cards touch the muck, the hand is dead.

N

Nickel
A five dollar cheque (chip), also known as "Red" or "Red Bird".

No-Limit
A version of poker in which a player may bet any amount of chips (up to the number in front of him) whenever it is his turn to act.

Nuts
The best possible hand.

Nuts Player
A player who only plays strong hands.

O

Offsuit
A starting hand in which the two first cards are of different suits.

Open
To start the action, the initial bet.

Option
The term used in Hold'Em or Omaha poker games when a player posting the Big Blind receives the opportunity to raise after all players have acted but have not raised.

Overcard
The highest card on the board.

Overpair
A pocket pair higher than any card on the flop.

P

Paint
A King, Queen, or Jack; i.e. a card with a picture on it.

Pass
To fold your hand.

Pat Hand
In draw poker, a hand that does not need to draw any cards to improve its strength.

Pitch
The procedure used to deal cards to the player.

Pitcher
A professional poker dealer.

Position
Position refers to your place at the poker table, especially with respect to the order of betting within a particular betting round. The first few players to act are said to be in early position, the next few in middle position, and the last few in late position. Late position is almost always best, since you have the advantage of knowing what your opponents have done.

Possible
A hand that needs only one card to complete it.

Pot
The area near the center of the table where the accumulated bets are placed.

Pot Limit
A poker game where the maximum wager is the amount in the pot.

Power
In Stud, the highest exposed hand.

Protect
To keep your hand or a chip on your cards. This prevents them from being fouled by a discarded hand, or accidentally mucked by the dealer. It is the player's responsibility to protect his/her hand.

Q

Quads
Four of a kind.

Quarter
Another name for the $25 chips, also known as a Green because that is the most common color of the $25 chip.

R

Rainbow
A flop that contains three different suits in a poker game. It can also mean a complete five-card board that has no more than two of any suit; thus no flush is possible.

Raise
To increase the size of the previous bet

Rake
An amount of money taken out of every pot by the dealer - this is the house's income.

Rank
The numerical value of a card (as opposed to its suit).

Ranking of Hands
  • Royal Flush - The five highest cards, 10 through Ace, all five of the same suit. A royal flush is actually an ace-high straight flush. Which suit it is doesn't matter in poker. Two people with royal flushes would tie.

  • Straight Flush - Any five cards of the same suit in consecutive numerical order.

  • Four of a Kind - Four cards of the same denomination.

  • Full House - Any three cards of the same denomination, plus any pair of a different denomination. Ties are broken first by the three of a kind, then the pair.

  • Flush - Any five non-consecutive cards of the same suit.

  • Straight - Any five consecutive cards of mixed suits. Ace can be high or low.

  • Three of a Kind - Three cards of the same denomination.

  • Two Pair - Any two cards of the same denomination, plus any other two cards of the same denomination. If both hands have the same high pair, the second pair wins. If both pairs tie, the highest fifth card wins.

  • Pair - Any two cards of the same denomination.

  • High Card - If no other hand is achieved, the highest card held wins.
Red
Red is the most common color for $5 chips also known as "Red Bird" or "Nickel".

Red Bird
A five dollar cheque (chip), also known as "Nickel" or "Red".

River
The fifth and final community card, put out face up, by itself. Also known as "Fifth Street".

Rock
A player who plays very tight. He raises only with the best hands. A real rock is fairly predictable - if he raises you on the end, you can throw away just about anything but the nuts.

S

Scoop
To win an entire pot, especially in high-low split poker games.

Second Pair
A pair with the second highest card on the flop.

Set
Three of a kind when you have two of the rank in your hand, and there is one on the board.

Short
An insufficient amount of money to call a bet, thus going "all-in".

Short Stack
A number of chips that is not very many compared to the other players at the table. If you have $20 in front of you, and everybody else at the table has over $100, you are playing on a short stack.

Showdown
The point at which all poker players remaining in the hand turn their cards over and determine who has the best hand.

Side Pot
A pot created in which a player has no interest because he has run out of chips.
Example: Player 1 bets $8, Player 2 calls the $8 bet, and Player 3 calls but has only $3 left. A $10 side pot is created that either Player 1 or 2 can win, but not Player 3. Furthermore, any more bets that Player 1 and 2 make go into the Side Pot making it the active pot. Player 3 can only win all the money in the original or "center" pot if his/her hand beats the other 2 players.
Sixth Street
The sixth card dealt in Seven-Card Stud.

Split Pot
A pot which is shared by two or more players because they have equal hands.

Straddle
An optional blind bet directly after the big blind (clockwise) and usually twice the size of the big blind. A straddle is a live blind therefore allowing the straddler to act last before the flop and now has the option to re-raise.

Street
A single round of dealing or betting.

String Bet
Two motions from a player's stack when making a raise. This is an illegal move.

T

Table Stakes
A rule in a poker game meaning that a player may not go into his pocket for money during a hand. He may only invest the amount of money in front of him into the current pot. If he runs out of chips during the hand, a side pot is created in which he has no interest. The definition sometimes includes the rule that a player may not remove chips from the table during a game.

Tell
A clue or hint that a player unknowingly gives about the strength of his hand, his next action, etc.

Third Street
The third card dealt in a stud game also known as the Door Card.

Time
A request by a poker player to suspend play while he decides what he's going to do. Simply say, "Time please!" If a player doesn't request time and there is a substantial amount of action behind him, the dealer may rule that the player has folded.

Toke
A gratuity given to a dealer - a tip. Quite often, tokes represent the great majority of a dealer's income.

Top Pair
A pair with the highest card on the flop.

Trey
Threes are sometimes called Treys.

Trips
Three of a kind.

Turn
The fourth community card. Put out face up, by itself. Also known as "Fourth Street".

Under the Gun
The position of the player who acts first on a betting round. For instance, if you are one to the left of the big blind, you are under the gun before the flop.

Underdog
A person or hand who is not mathematically favored to win a pot.

Wager
An amount put into action with the intent of winning the pot. Also known as a bet.

Wheel
A straight from ace to five.

White
A one dollar casino cheque or chip.
